Andrew Jackson Elementary School
Kindergarten
From September-December 2012 I student-taught two days each week in one of the kindergarten classrooms of Andrew Jackson Elementary School. Presently, there are nineteen students in the class, though that number has fluctuated throughout the semester. The students come from a variety of backgrounds. While many of the students attended preschool, the structure and length of the day of kindergarten has proved to be challenge for many. Nevertheless, the class overall is a happy bunch of energetic five and six year olds. Most, if not all, seem excited to be at school at least a majority of the time. They appear to be proud of their budding capabilities, especially as they learn to read and write.
This website focuses on three group and one whole class lessons that I taught this semester. Each lesson had its own goals, but overall I examined the issues of discourse and student engagement as facilitators of learning. I manipulated my lesson plans in a way that, based on my research and classwork this semester, I hoped would foster student understanding.
